Ohio University

Established in 1804, Ohio University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state. Located in the scenic Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio, its classic residential campus is one of the most attractive. The city of Athens is surrounded by a patchwork of hardwood forests that constitute the Wayne National Forest. The university has earned a reputation for its rich educational tradition and outstanding academic programs.

The main campus includes more than 25,000 students who come from nearly every state and close to 100 nations around the world. Five regional campuses further extend educational access and opportunity to students across southern Ohio.

Ohio University students' success in winning many of the nation's most prestigious and competitive academic awards is at a record high. Its total number of Fulbright winners, for example, currently ranks the university first in the state for the fourth-straight year and nationally places Ohio University in the company of Boston College, Princeton and UCLA. The Honors Tutorial College is the only degree-granting college of its kind in the country and mirrors the same one-on-one tutorial system practiced for centuries at Cambridge and Oxford.

Ohio University has been cited for academic quality and value by such publications as U.S. News and World Report, America's 100 Best College Buys, Princeton Review's Best Colleges, and Peterson's Guide to Competitive Colleges. The John Templeton Foundation has also recognized Ohio University as one of the top character-building institutions in the country.
