One-Year Option: Educators

What is the One Year Option?

The One Year Option was established by House Bill 59 and allows graduate from Ohio Technical Center 600 or greater hour programs to earn a block of technical credit toward an Associates of Technical Studies. The goal of this initiative is to create a statewide agreement for awarding technical credit in addition to current statewide agreements such as Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAGs). In order to soundly affirm awarding a block of credit for the One Year Option, four credit affirmation teams have been established in the following areas: Business and IT, Health, Services and Agriculture, and Trades. These teams are currently in the process of reviewing all applicable 900+ hour OTC programs. As teams finish reviewing the 900+ hour programs, the teams will review the applicable 600- 899 hour OTC programs.

How is the One Year Option different than Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAGs)?

There are several differences between the One-Year Option and Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAGs).

  ONE YEAR OPTION CTAGS
Degree Type Awards students a block of credit toward an ATS degree Awards students credit that can be applied to a variety of associate’s degrees (AAS, AAB, AIS, ATS)
Credit Application Awards a block of technical credit that applies to a general degree (ATS) and does not align to specific courses Awards a block of credit that may be applied to a specific degree type and  specific course requirements
Career Goal Awards students a general degree (ATS) that may be viewed as fitting those careers and job positions when the employer is neutral as to the degree earned Award course credit to more specific degrees that may be viewed as the standard within an industry and/or are required to take a licensure or registry exam
Program Completion Awards students in a 900+ clock hour program with an approved industry credential, 30 technical credit hours towards an ATS degree Awards students between 3 and 30 credits with the average number of credit hours being 14 credit hours

What requirements do students need to meet in order to be eligible for the One Year Option?

To be eligible for the One Year Option, students must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Completion of a 600 or greater hour program at an Ohio Technical Center
  2. Hold an industry-recognized credential(s) approved by the Chancellor
  3. Meet the credentialing pathway requirements as determined by the applicable credit affirmation team

Please note that the credit affirmation teams are in the process of reviewing all of the 900+ hour programs and as teams finish reviewing these programs, the teams will review programs 600-899 hours in length. The webpage will be updated as programs are reviewed and pathways created.

What credentials are required for a specific pathway?

The list of currently approved pathways and credentialing requirements can be found at the below excel link.

What research was involved in affirming these pathways?

Please see below for links to templates that show the research and rationale for awarding a block of technical credit to the currently approved pathways.

Who was involved in the One Year Option review process?

The Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education convened four credit affirmation teams (CATs) to conduct a peer review of programs and certifications for affirmation for a block of technical credit.  The CATs were organized by four discipline clusters: Health and Allied Health, Building and Industrial Technology, Business and Information Technology, and Services. CATs are working to affirm that programs over 900 hours, articulate to a block of 30 technical credit hours.  For programs between 600-899 hours, the teams are working to affirm a proportional amount of technical credit. Please see below for a list of credit affirmation team co-chairs and team members.

Additionally, prior to the review process, the Chancellor convened a broad group stakeholders to develop a system of articulation for the One Year Option that was presented in a report to the legislature called, “Getting to 30: Establishing a One Year Option Credit Articulation System for Ohio.” Please see below for a list of who was a part of this initial steering committee.
