Ohio Observing National GEAR UP Week Sept. 20-26

COLUMBUS, Ohio (2020-09-21) —

Ohio is among several states observing a week dedicated to the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant. The grant – from the U.S. Department of Education – is designed to increase the number of low-income students prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

The GEAR UP Ohio program, which annually serves approximately 7,000 students, is focused on
embedding a college-going culture in targeted schools and communities. Each consortium site includes
educational, college access, and business partners, providing direct services and scholarship funding support to
priority students. These consortia work under the direction of and in partnership with the Ohio Department of
Higher Education (ODHE) and College Now Greater Cleveland. The consortia sites are represented by the
following organizations:

  • Crooksville: Crooksville Exempted Village Schools, Muskingum County Community Foundation's Scholarship Central Access Program, Zane State College
  • Marion: Marion City Schools, United Way of Marion County, The Ohio State University at Marion
  • Norwood: Norwood City Schools, Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College
  • Parma: Parma City Schools, College Now Greater Cleveland, Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus

National GEAR UP week started Sept. 20; during the week, each of the GEAR UP Ohio consortia sites will
have several programs and activities to support the students and families in their communities. In addition,
GEAR UP Ohio will hold three statewide activities:

  • GEAR UP Ohio Youth Leadership Summit (OYLS) Coffee Chat – an opportunity for OYLS students and staff to reconnect after concluding the summer virtual camp
  • GEAR UP Ohio partners with Porter Wright law firm – an opportunity to host a virtual college and career readiness event focused on careers in fields connected to athletics
  • GEAR UP Ohio visits Bowling Green State University – an opportunity for GEAR UP Ohio students to participate in a virtual campus visit

“The GEAR UP program directly engages students and builds an understanding of the importance of
education, as well as the long-term benefits it provides to individuals, families, and communities,” said ODHE’s
Carlos Bing, director of the GEAR UP Ohio program. “GEAR UP Ohio places an emphasis on creating effective,
sustainable partnership models, with a singular focus on long-term student success. Fostering good study habits,
promoting enrollment in rigorous middle-school and high-school courses, and exploring education-to-career
pathways are essential for all students. GEAR UP focuses on these outcomes while helping students realize that
their goals are well within reach.”
