Collegiate Purple Star

Collegiate Purple Star Event - 3/8/22

Chancellor Randy Gardner and other speakers unveiled the Collegiate Purple Star at an event held at Hilliard Davidson High School on March 8, 2022.

Collegiate Purple Star

The Collegiate Purple Star will recognize those public and independent colleges and universities in Ohio that are supportive and inclusive of military-connected students. Designations will be determined by a Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee after evaluation and recommendation. The advisory committee will be appointed by the Chancellor and composed of members from organizations that include but aren’t limited to ODHE, the Ohio Veterans Education Council (with representation from two-year colleges, four-year universities, and independent institutions), the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department, and the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission K-12 Purple Star Committee.

Application

On March 8, 2022, the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education introduced a Directive to announce the creation of the Collegiate Purple Star designation for Ohio colleges and universities.

Interested colleges and universities must submit an application to be considered for the Collegiate Purple Star designation. The application is designed so that adherence to all elements of the criteria in the Directive can be verified by the Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee.

The Chancellor shall convene the Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee to coincide with applications from public and independent colleges and universities. The role of the advisory committee is to work collaboratively with Ohio’s public and independent colleges and universities to seek their application to attain this designation. The advisory committee will make its recommendations to the Chancellor after reviewing applications at the end of the application cycle. After the Chancellor’s final determination and designation, the public and independent colleges and universities will then be informed of their application status. The designation will be active for a period of three years, at which time the approved institution will need to renew its application.

Occasionally the Chancellor will post on the agency’s webpage the application and submission process for seeking new and renewal designations, including the time period to submit. The application will include the Collegiate Purple Star Criteria listed below and any other information the Chancellor considers relevant. Applications must be accompanied by the signature of the college or university president attesting to the college’s or university’s willingness to uphold the military-friendly criteria.

The Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee shall evaluate applications from public and independent colleges and universities and make recommendations to the Chancellor. Colleges and universities that successfully apply for and receive the Collegiate Purple Star designation will receive permission from the Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee to utilize a newly created logo or badge signifying their designation and commitment to uphold the military-friendly criteria. The Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee will have oversight of a college’s or university’s accountability and will monitor student appeals if an issue is brought forward and reserves the right to recommend to the Chancellor a college or university should have its designation revoked for failure to comply with the requirements.
