Evaluation and Promising Practices
This session will review the promising practices that are used to evaluate military experience and training and identify the appropriate college credit that should be awarded. Whether you are a faculty member, an advisor or transfer credit evaluator, this session will identify multiple useful resources for all types of institutions. The goal is to help you understand the promising practices for the Evaluation Process leading to consistency and transparency statewide. Developing an understanding of how adopting these promising practices will fit into your existing processes and become part of your institutional practice will assist with implementing HB 488 requirements. This session will provide an overview for regional training days that will be offered throughout spring 2015 to bring these promising practices to your faculty and staff.
Understanding Military Transcripts and MTAGs
This session focuses on reading and understanding military transcripts, with detailed demonstrations using Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) and Joint Services Transcript (JST) examples. It will also briefly introduce the new Military Transfer Assurance Guide (MTAG) initiative, which will mirror the current statewide system (Ohio Transfer Module, Transfer Assurance Guides, & Career-Technical Assurance Guides) to assure consistent transferability and applicability of military credits among institutions. This presentation is targeted to faculty and staff who advise students, evaluate military training, and process and post academic credits.
Veterans Services on Campus
Veterans Services can run the gamut from certifying benefits to reserved housing—what’s a school to do? Please join us for ideas on how to customize services for your campus in order to both meet the new state law and best serve the veterans and military members on your campus now. Emphasis will be placed on resources available to help you develop unique programs and how to size them as this population increases with the coming military drawdown and departure from Afghanistan.
Promising Practices to Creating a Student Veteran Organization
Student veteran organizations help their members enact change on their campus, recreate comradery, and assist with adjusting to college life. In this Student Veteran Organization Panel, student veteran leaders from various campuses talk about the ins and outs of creating and maintaining a student veteran organization. Learn how to create or to grow your own veteran organization on your campus through involvement and social activity.
The American Council on Education (ACE) Faculty Evaluators
This session will provide an opportunity to have a conversation with the faculty reviewers and the director of college and university partnerships for the American Council on Education (ACE) about the rigor and quality of the ACE review and credit recommendation process for military training, experience, and coursework. The panelists will share their experiences as reviewers.
Learn promising practices from military and veteran service centers that have successfully implemented programming through community partnerships, campus collaborations and other resources. A panel of representatives from two- and four-year University System of Ohio institutions describes promising practices, their program history, and the resources they discovered on and off campus to provide wrap-around services to service members and their families. Statewide initiatives that support service members such as the GI Promise will also be discussed.
Workforce Transformation on Credentialing
In almost all surveys of the veteran and military community, education and jobs are identified as top issues in Ohio and across the nation. The Office of Workforce Transformation and the Ohio Department of Veterans Services have collaborated with an array of public and private partners, including the Ohio Board of Regents and the University System of Ohio, to address these concerns. This session will help attendees become more familiar with how the institutional programs to support veterans in their pursuit of education fit into the larger statewide effort to connect them to career opportunities and support employers in the State of Ohio.
